The organ in the Reoloteca quarter of Tehuantepec is the only surviving instrument near the coast of Oaxaca, where the climate is not kind to wooden constructions. It was built by Mariano (Martinez) Bonavides, a member of the Martínez dynasty of organ builders in 18th and 19th century Oaxaca. The organ highlights the typical features of mid-19th century construction and neo-classical case decoration. It is almost identical to the two organs built by Pedro Nibra, a friend of the Martínez family, in Jalatlaco and Amilpas. Yet interestingly enough, the contract with the organbuilder states that the proposed organ should be like the one in Sta. María Marquesado, but with an even more refined sound. The contract also mentions that once the organ was finished, it must be evaluated by the esteemed musician Don Macedonio Alcalá or one of his brothers. Sadly, this organ has been abandoned and is badly deteriorated.
