SECOND INTERNATIONAL ORGAN MUSIC FESTIVAL
OAXACA, MEXICO

November 21-24, 2002

The enthusiastic response to our First International Organ Festival established this concert series as an annual event in Oaxaca. We decided to continue the impulse generated by the associated Conference and focus once again on the theme of restoration, but this time it would be on a more practical level. The Second Festival was organized along with a National Conference dedicated to the theme of organ restoration in Mexico rather than all of Latin America.

Daniel Guzmán, Director of the Musical Instrument Division of the National School of Conservation, Restoration, and Museography (ENCRyM), led the discussions at each organ regarding the practical application of themes related to organ documentation and conservation.  All participants received a notebook containing technical information and architectural scale drawings of the organs we visited, as well as a copy of the Guidelines as a reference during the discussions. At the conclusion of the Festival, each community representative was given a framed photograph of their organ to be displayed in the corresponding municipal office.

November 27- December 3, 2001

Nearly eighty people from thirteen countries and diverse states of Mexico gathered in Oaxaca for the IOHIO’s first major event, an International Festival of Organ Music and a Conference on the theme of “The Restoration of Organs in Latin America.”  The goal of the Festival was to present the organs played by international specialists in the Iberian repertoire to a growing public of organ music enthusiasts. The goal of the Conference was to highlight Oaxaca’s outstanding collection of baroque instruments and to reflect on how best to protect them. The Conference resulted in two important documents, the Oaxaca Protocol 2001, signed by all participants, which summed up guiding principles for future organ restorations, and the preliminary version of a technical and ethical Code for the Restoration of Organs in Latin America.
