The organ of Santa Cruz Amilpas is the last Oaxaca organ built in traditional style. The other organs in the state from the 1880s were built by Puebla organ builders, and the Amilpas organ incorporates a few of their innovations. The organ is terribly deteriorated, even though it is "young," because after the 1931 earthquake, the roof of the church cracked open and the organ was left unprotected for 30 years before the roof was reconstructed. So it was played for only 47 years. The organ was recently moved toward the railing of the choir loft in anticipation of repairs to the dome and was unfortunately damaged even more. The photo is a composite, since the current position of the organ makes a portrait photo impossible.
