The organ of Santiago Ixtaltepec is one of a group of six 2´ table organs that are nearly identical in construction. This organ was rebuilt in historic style in 1872 by the Oaxaca organbuilder Jesús Cano and is the only one of the group (other than the reconstructed organ in Tamazulapan) with pipes and a keyboard. The case, table, and bellows box are profusely decorated with acanthus motifs. The front and sides of the case depict the founders of the Jesuit order: left side, Saint Francis Borja; left door exterior, Saint Ignatius Loyola; right door exterior, Saint Francis Xavier; right side, Saint Louis Gonzaga. The Jesuit imagery is surprising in the Mixteca Alta, mainly Dominican territory, and the organ may have been bought or donated from a Jesuit church after the expulsion of the order from Mexico in 1767.
