The organ of Santiago Chazumba seems to have been the first one built entirely in Puebla and transported in pieces to Oaxaca across the northern state border before the influx of Castro organs later in the century. Other Puebla organs of the period (Quilitongo, Nuxaá, Teotitlan de Flores Magón) differ since only the mechanics appear to have been imported, while the case was built on-site with Oaxaca-style hips. The Chazumba organ features typical characteristics of Puebla organ building: a case with straight sides, metal tubing to feed the bardón stop (added after the original construction), perforations in the upper case to enhance the acoustics, and the distinctive reed registers corneta and tolosana. This organ must have had a bold, bright sound since two of the six stops are reeds. However, it also includes features not typical of other Puebla organs in Oaxaca: the two small lateral towers with speaking pipes which relieve the organ’s boxlike shape, the fine carving around the upper case, and the façade pipe decoration with interwoven designs instead of the multicolored flowers typical of Oaxaca. This organ is unique in having a religious text, part of a psalm in Latin, painted on the façade.
