The organ of San Miguel Arcangel Teotitlán de Flores Magón is part of a group of four similar 8´ instruments whose mechanics were built by Puebla organbuilders and transported to Oaxaca, but whose cases were built on-site. It was once a noble instrument, as indicated by its exquisitely carved case decoration and well-preserved windchest, but unfortunately, it is now badly deteriorated and, like the rest of the choir loft, infested with bat guano. The two stopknobs controlling the principal rank are located on the sides of the key desk, similar to the organ in Nuxaá. A label inside the chest specifies that it and probably all the other mechanical components were built in 1839 by Gregorio Arroyo and Joaquin Nieva. The construction was financed by the church confraternity or brotherhood (cofradía) of “Señor San Miguel Patrón de esta parroquía de Teotitlan del Camino”. The mechanics include such Puebla characteristics as a lengthened keyboard without a short octave before this feature was adopted in Oaxaca, a bowed contour over the flat towers, and an upper case wider than the lower. A carpenter, either local or a collaborator with the organ builders, would have built the case in the community with hips, seemingly a prerequisite for organs in Oaxaca territory.
