The monumental organ of San Juan Bautista Coixtlahuaca is the second to last extant instrument made by a Oaxaca builder. It is one of a kind and stands as a final salute to the imaginative, custom-made possibilities of Oaxaca organ design. It contrasts with the latest organ in Santa Cruz Amilpas built just eight years later in 1884, which is traditional in construction and overall appearance, as well as the relatively homogeneous organs from the Castro workshop in Puebla, which were prevalent in the northern border areas during the same period. The Coixtlahuaca organ shows the influence of Puebla organ-building in certain construction details and in fact the project was financed by donations collected by the Dominican friars in Puebla. However, José Cano or whoever designed the case emphasized Oaxaca characteristics such as the elegant hips and fine case painting (a faux wood pattern with striations, knots, and swirls). Cano chose to make wedge rather than reservoir bellows and modified the chest construction to ensure a grand sound for the Trompeta real. An inventory of 1803 cites a former organ of medium dimensions.
