The organ of Santiago Tamazola and the similar instruments in Ahuehuetitlán, Ihualtepec, and Zapotitlan Lagunas, are located in relatively close communities in the flat northwestern region of the Mixteca Baja near the state border with Puebla. They were built by the Castro family organ building company in Puebla, which dominated organ construction in this area throughout the 19th century. Castro organs were well-made and elegant in appearance, yet immediately distinguishable from Oaxaca organs. Their distinctive features include the straight sides of the case (without hips), symmetrical perforations or lattice grids on the sides and back, the curved upper profile of the interior flat towers, stop knobs in two rows, an extended keyboard, and metal tubing. The stop names and the cornet register are typical of Puebla, rather than Oaxaca, organs. The Tamazola organ is a slightly larger and more elaborated version of the organ in Zapotitlán Lagunas, which does not have a clarín. The dates 1885 and 1888 are painted inside the back doors with similar lettering. The later date probably referred to the completion of the organ’s construction.
