The organ in the church of la Preciosa Sangre de Cristo, Teotitlán del Valle, is relatively modest, with just five registers and no reeds. However, its case design is unusual. Semi-circular carvings crowning the three towers were not only decorative but also functional. A hole was cut in the roof above each tower one so that the tallest pipe could project through it. The center hole was square for one of the two tallest wooden principal pipes; the other two were round for the tallest metal pipes. Small decorative towers with non-speaking pipes jut out from the sides, while the hips merge from the upper to the lower case. Perhaps a large carved lambrequin decorated the missing central panel. The previous organ had been disassembled in 1809 by the organ builder Lucas Morales, who was also the organist in the Oaxaca Cathedral. It was probably an imposing baroque instrument, congruent with the splendid altarpieces and paintings in the church. It is possible that some components, now lost, were recycled into the 19th-century organ. By the time of the new organ’s construction in 1821, it seems that the authorities no longer had the resources to commission a similarly large instrument.
